Fundraising

There are a lot of requests for funding and support at the moment, and a lot of people are eager to be generous.  This is a little bit of advice Earlsfield Together put together to help Street Coordinators think about how their streets might look after money if they collect as a street.

Be aware that collecting money for donations as a street has its risks.  Fundraising comes with very strict safeguarding regulations, and it's really important that people don’t feel pressured to give money in any way.

Look at this page for some tips on how to choose which fundraisers to share information about and things to look for before giving.

(1) Be very transparent in your communities about where the money is and who has access to it.

  • You can use crowdfunding options, which can make this easier

  • You can deciding on who or what you’re donating to as a group and then individually donate directly to them.

(2) When fundraising or discussing fundraising in your groups:

  • Be very clear that no one should feel obliged to give money.

    • Repeat this frequently - social pressure can easily build up on a person if lots of other people are very excited and enthusiastic about giving.

  • Do not pledge money, report pledges, or thank people for donations in your main group discussion. This also creates social pressure.

(3) If money is being collected before being donated: make sure:

  • Everyone knows where the money is being collected and who has access to it.

  • 3 or more unrelated people decide who gets the money: select these across your community.
