Sharing Fundraisers

There are a lot of requests for funding and support at the moment, and a lot of people are eager to be generous.  This is a little bit of advice Earlsfield Together put together to help Street Coordinators think about how to choose what you might want to support, and how to choose what requests you share with your street.

If you do want to give as a street community:

Before sharing an appeal or giving to one

  • Check out what the appeal is for.

    • In general, you have more assurance that your money will be used as you hoped if you give to a registered, regulated charity.

    • If you’ve not heard of a group or fundraiser before, ask around - google, or see if other people have heard about it and what they’ve heard - even if it comes from someone you trust.

  • Be cautious about people collecting for a general cause - ask questions about who is collecting the money, where it will be held, and who will make decisions about distributing it.

  • A genuine fundraiser should be happy to answer questions and explain more about what they’re fundraising for and how the money will be used.

  • Never feel under pressure by a fundraiser into making a donation immediately

  • Be wary of unsolicited emails or messages from charities you have never heard of and do not click on the links the contain

  • Ignore requests to donate through a money transfer company as this is a popular scam.
